Many of us are relieved that summer is finally here, however it does also come with its fair share of challenges. Whether it’s a pack social calendar you’re having to keep up with, increased levels of pollen triggering your hay fever, or the fact that you’ve kick-started your fitness regime again and are already feeling exhausted, it’s important to realise that you should also be proactively looking after your mental health and overall wellbeing during what can be a very demanding time of the year on our bodies.
Here are some of our recommended tips and pointers for keeping on top of things during summer months. Even if you’re only incorporating a few, it can still make a big difference to your health and wellbeing!
Stay Hydrated
You should aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This can help with so many things, including stopping you from getting ill and keeping your energy levels up when you’re taking on more activities during the day. If you don’t really like the taste of water by itself, you can also add in slices of fruit like lemon or oranges for some added zest.
Take the Sun
This might happen naturally, but if not, make sure you are actively taking the sun when you can. Summer is the time that everyone should be topping up their vitamin D levels, which can seriously help your immune system and keep your body in good form. So if you’re sitting at your desk all day and the sun is shining, try your best to pop out for 30 minutes to catch some rays.
Equally, if you’re still stuck in winter mode (which is completely fine if you are) and are not ready to embrace the crowds of the city or high street, try to plan excursions where you go out to a park or green area to enjoy some outdoor time. This can seem like an obvious point, but it’s so good for your health and wellbeing.
Be Sensible with Exercise
Assuming you are getting back into some form of exercise, make sure you are sensible in your approach. Don’t go too hard all at once and try to ease yourself back into a routine. This is the best way to improve your health sustainably and without injury after months of potential inactivity.
Eat Seasonal Vegetables
The freshly grown produce from local markets and farms tends to have a lower carbon footprint as well as offer the greatest taste benefits. This can feel really great both for your health and sense of balance. Summer is the best time to drop processed foods and takeaways and simply enjoy cooking at home, and if you’re lucky, eating outdoors.
Create Wellness Plan
If you haven’t already got one, or if you need some help first, we would recommend building a wellness plan that actively aims to create some positive exchange. This could also involve addressing any niggles or pains that have developed over the colder months through bodywork techniques, or a combined Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine health plan. It’s up to you what you include, but if you want some ideas, don’t be shy and give us a call! We offer a range of series including acupuncture in central London.
