More and more couples in the Western world are suffering from infertility in the 21st century, and it is a fact that doctors don’t know why. Furthermore, it is affecting both sexes. The sperm count of males is reducing, while at the same time more couples are leaving it until later in life to start a family as they try to boost their careers and establish a sound financial footing before doing so.
Certainly, this would make sense in the UK, where house prices have gone through the roof and young couples simply cannot afford a deposit, despite the fact that both of them are working. It is only 50 or 60 years ago that only one member of the family went to work – the husband – while the wife stayed at home to look after the children and the house. Today, even two incomes seem to be insufficient.
Another very big factor comes into play here and that is stress. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever – especially if you talk to anyone over the age of sixty or seventy – that although we had just been through a World War, the 1950s were fairly relaxed. Certainly, there was food rationing and you couldn’t buy any of the technological gadgets that we have today, but there was no great sense of urgency. Now there are far more people in the UK – heading for 70 million in a few years’ time, whereas in the 1950’s it was 50 million. That is a 40% increase! No wonder it takes an hour, or an hour and a half, to get to work and then the same to get home!
Is it any wonder that we are suffering from stress?
And coming back to the point about infertility, it is known that stress is one of the biggest causes, both for men and women.
